Brits can look forward to an extra bank holiday in 2022 courtesy of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

We’re no stranger to bank holidays in the UK, with England enjoying eight of them each year including Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Every so often, the nation is treated to an extra bank holiday to commemorate a landmark royal occasion, like Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011. And 2022 is the next example of when the country can benefit from this exception: all thanks to Queen Elizabeth II and her incredible reign.

Next year’s extra bank holiday will honour this historic anniversary and the Queen’s birthday in one bumper weekend. The special occasion will see a change to the usual May Day bank holiday, to coincide with a series of nationwide events celebrating our Monarch.

When is the extra bank holiday in 2022 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee?

The extra bank holiday in 2022 for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be Friday 3 June.

The UK government department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) have confirmed the extra public holiday will result in a long weekend in June 2022 to honour the Queen’s special anniversary.

This will see the May Day Bank Holiday – usually held on the first Monday in May – moved to Thursday 2 June 2022. And this will compliment the additional bank holiday on the Friday, creating a four-day weekend for the occasion.

The Queen’s Jubilee in June 2022 sets a new historic royal record for Elizabeth II. In honour of this, the country will come together for a series of special jubilee events celebrating our Monarch.

“The Queen is the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee,” said a statement on the Royal Family twitter account. “The extended bank holiday weekend will see public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service.”

Details of the Jubilee celebrations for the special June 2022 celebration have been released. With events for the occasion spanning the four-day bank holiday weekend.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said that the UK could look forward to a “spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology”.

“It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s reign,” he added.

Thursday 2nd June 2022

  • The Queen’s Birthday Parade (known as Trooping of the Colour) – The annual parade returns for 2022 with military personal, musicians and the traditional RAF flypast.
  • Platinum Jubilee Beacons: Commemorative beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.

Friday 3rd June 2022

  • Thanksgiving Service: A special service at St Paul’s Cathedral will pays thanks to the Queen and her reign.

Saturday 4th June 2022

  • The Epsom Derby: The Queen and other members of the Royal firm will attend the Derby at Epsom Downs.
  • Platinum Party at the Palace: A special concert broadcast live from Buckingham Palace will see global music and entertainment stars perform in celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee. The likes of Paul McCartney and Cliff Richard were two stars to perform at the Golden Jubilee concert in 2002, with big names expected for next year’s line-up. Details on how the public can secure tickets are set to be released soon.

Sunday 5th June 2022

  • The Big Jubilee Lunch: The annual Big Lunch event will take place with communities incorporating jubilee celebrations and decorations into their street and garden parties.
  • The Platinum Jubilee Pageant: 5,000 artists, actors and performers from the UK and across the Commonwealth will feature in a pageant staged around Buckingham Palace and the surrounding areas.

Further events are expected to be announced in due course. This will include a special Jubilee emblem design competition supported by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Design Museum and the Royal College of Art. With the winning entry going on to become the official emblem for the celebrations next year.

Will I get paid time off for the extra bank holiday in 2022?

Whether you automatically receive paid time off for the extra bank holiday on Friday 3rd June depends on your employment contract.

According to law firm Smith Cooper, work contracts that define holiday entitlement as ‘X number of days plus bank holidays’ are likely to get paid for the bank holiday.

In contrast, contracts that specify bank holidays allowed with their holiday entitlement – i.e. ‘X number of days plus New Years Day, Easter Monday..’ or ‘plus 8 bank holidays’ might not. Unless otherwise stated.

With this in mind, it’s a good idea to check the wording in your employee contract. And contact your HR department should you have any questions.

How many bank holidays do we get in 2022?

In 2022, there are a total of 9 bank holidays. This includes the extra bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

UK bank holidays in 2022:

  • New Year’s Day (substitute day – Monday 3 January – UK wide)
  • Good Friday (Friday 15 April – UK wide)
  • Easter Monday (Monday 18 April – England, Wales and Northern Ireland only)
  • Early May Bank Holiday (Monday 2 May – UK wide)
  • Spring Bank Holiday (Thursday 2 June – UK wide)
  • Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday (Friday 3 June – UK wide)
  • Summer Bank Holiday (Monday 29 August – England, Wales and Northern Ireland only)
  • Boxing Day (Monday 26 December – UK wide)
  • Christmas Day (substitute day – Tuesday 27 December – UK wide)

A regular year typically features eight bank holidays and should a bank holiday land on a weekend (as in Christmas 2022), a substitute bank holiday follows on the next available weekday.

Those that want to make the most of the extra bank holiday in 2022 can take advantage of a clever holiday hack.

This enables an individual to book off three days of annual leave – but enjoy nine consecutive days off in total (thanks to the Queen’s platinum jubilee)

To benefit from the nine days off between Saturday 28th May to Sunday 5th June 2022, yo should book off the following:

  • Monday 30th May
  • Tuesday 31st May
  • Wednesday 1st June

How many years is a Platinum Jubilee and when did Queen Elizabeth II become Queen?

A Platinum Jubilee celebrates 70 years on the throne. So, it’s a momentous occasion for Queen Elizabeth II, the UK and the Commonwealth.

During the celebrations, a Platinum Jubilee medal will be awarded to those in public service. This will include representatives from the Armed Forces and the emergency services.

Elizabeth II became Queen on February 6th 1952, following the passing of her father George VI. She is officially the UK’s longest serving monarch, surpassing the reign of her great-great-grandmother Victoria in 2015. And it doesn’t look like the Queen will retire anytime soon.

The Queen’s coronation took place on 2 June 1953 in Westminster Abbey. Queen Elizabeth II was the thirty-ninth sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey.

Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation was particularly historic as it was the first ever coronation to be televised. More than 20 million people watched the coronation, outnumbering the radio audience for the first time. Thought it wasn’t only UK viewers watching, as this was a global event with many around the world tuning in.

25-year-old Elizabeth was one of the youngest monarchs to ascend the throne at the time. With the Queen celebrating her official birthday a week later.
