How to stop drinking alcohol: 7 things I did that REALLY helped

Image
It’s that time of year again, Dry January – the most depressing time of the year when, after all the excesses of the festive season, many of us vow to stop drinking alcohol. I haven’t drank alcohol for 50 days – not because I was an alcoholic, or I’d hit any kind of rock bottom, but because I was bored of being hungover and wasting my weekends. And, I’m not the only one. There are a growing number of ‘sober curious’ people out there who’ve been swayed by the benefits of giving up alcohol and decided they want to live a healthier lifestyle, without the beer belly, dehydrated skin, short temper and ‘hang-xiety’. Millie Gooch, founder of  Sober Girl Society explains: “ Drinking numbers are declining , especially in millennials – and supermarkets including Sainsbury’s have been reporting soaring sales in their non-alcoholic drinks. It’s a perfect storm of a lot of things but I think there’s two main reasons. “Firstly, we’re more conscious of what we’re putting in our bodies. It star

Study reveals daunting list of parental jobs that mums and dad fulfil each day

Image
The average parent is required to fulfil a daunting list of jobs on a daily basis. A study of 2,000 mums and dads found many will act as a cleaner, teacher, chef, taxi driver, doctor and even a negotiator on a daily basis. Parents will carry out seven different ‘jobs’ for their children before 9am, and another seven during the rest of the morning. They will also fulfil nine roles between lunchtime and the end of the day. And the teacher hat is put on for three hours each week as they help their children complete their homework. It emerged 83 per cent believe being a parent means you must be an ‘expert’ in multiple jobs. Nub theory explained: Predict your baby’s sex at 12 weeks

Image
What exactly is the nub theory - and how can it help to predict the sex of your baby before the five month scan? We’ve all heard of the old wives tales like carrying your baby bump low means it’s a boy, or if you’re craving sweet things, you’re expecting a girl. If you’re looking for the nub theory explained, or want some more ideas on how to tell your little one’s gender, you’ve come to the right place. The nub theory claims to be a lot more accurate than some of those old wives tales – and claims you can even tell the sex of your baby just by looking at your 12 week ultrasound picture. Usually the earliest point you can tell the sex of a baby from a scan is 20 weeks, so the quirky theory is popular with those who can’t wait to find out if they’re having a little girl or boy. What is nub theory? Between 11-13 weeks, all babies are said to have a ‘nub’ between their legs called the genital tubercle, and according to this theory the angle of the nub will indicate whether it’s a

Thomasina Miers’ New Year recipe for baked sea bass with lemongrass and nam jim | The simple fix

There’s no better time than New Year’s Eve for this quick celebratory fish dish This is a spectacular but incredibly easy feast for New Year. I try to save fish for high days and holidays: there’s no better excuse than New Year’s Eve for this quick-to-cook and suitably celebratory sea bass. I like to give it an Asian treatment, especially after all the rich flavours of Christmas. Try to find a local, Asian supermarket, because they often sell coriander with the root still attached (it has a sweet, heady taste). Then smash those Thai ingredients in a mortar and let the nuances of flavour captivate everyone at the table. Continue reading... from Recipes | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2Qd5f0N via IFTTT

Rachel Roddy’s recipe for prune, marsala and custard pudding | A kitchen in Rome

A cross between bread-and-butter pudding and zabaglione, this tasty pudding has a boozy edge Often, tinned prunes are blamed, or the prunes and custard at school, or the cut-glass bowl full of them in a seaside hotel dining room with wallpaper that smelled of mince and Benson & Hedges. Yet there is no blame or trauma on my part: the tin of prunes in syrup my grandma always kept in the cupboard next to the peaches and pears; the bag of teddy bear noses (more on this later) on the shelf; or the bowls of soaked prunes, which looked like enormous sea slugs, on whatever sideboard: I liked them all. So black and thick, their sweetness concentrated and almost spicy. Then there were what I thought of as “grown-up” prunes: the tin of stuffed prunes Dad bought Mum for Christmas every year. I now know they were prunes d’Agen, named after a town in Aquitaine in south-west France and stuffed with prune cream. But back then they were simply prunes stuffed with prunes: something I liked, stuffe
